Research Interests
Research and Scholarly Interests
David's research and scholarship span Higher Education (HE), Initial Teacher Education (ITE) and international education, with a particular interest in how educational practices develop across institutional, disciplinary, linguistic and cultural contexts. His current interests include:
-
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and educational development in higher education, including approaches to supporting, embedding and evaluating scholarly educational practice.
-
Multilingual and intercultural pedagogies, particularly within teacher education and primary education, including plurilingual approaches, third-language learning and the educational potential of local languages.
-
STEM education and interdisciplinary learning, particularly within teacher education, including curriculum and assessment, teacher professional learning, interdisciplinary approaches to STEM, and the development of STEM practice through Knowledge Exchange.
-
Internationalisation and intercultural learning, including the ways in which students and educators learn across cultural, institutional and national contexts.
-
Transnational education and international educational partnerships, with particular interest in inclusive, reciprocal and context-sensitive approaches to partnership and professional learning.
-
Student partnership and co-research, including approaches that position students as active contributors to the investigation and development of educational practice.
-
Virtual Exchange and Collaborative Online International Learning (VE/COIL) as approaches to widening participation in international and intercultural learning.
-
Knowledge Exchange and educational impact, particularly the translation of research and scholarship into professional learning, educational resources and wider institutional and professional practice.
These interests have developed through sustained work across Primary Education, ITE and HE. David's scholarship on Chinese language and culture, third-language pedagogies, STEM education, study abroad and comparative education provides an established foundation for his developing work around multilingualism, intercultural education, international collaboration and higher education pedagogy.
His STEM work has encompassed curriculum and assessment, interdisciplinary learning and teacher professional development, alongside Knowledge Exchange with schools, teachers and local authorities. This includes externally funded work supporting the development of Craft, Design, Engineering and related STEM practice within primary education.
His work is collaborative and interdisciplinary, involving colleagues within SIoE and partners in the UK and internationally. He is particularly interested in collaborations that connect research, scholarship and Knowledge Exchange and that generate educational practices and resources capable of adaptation across different contexts.
David contributes to the wider language education research community as a member of the editorial team for Scottish Languages Review and as a reviewer for The Language Learning Journal. He is also a committee member of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Asian Languages Special Interest Group.
